Petito's parents are going to donate whatever they get from Laundrie's estate to the Petito foundation.

The foundation will continue to address the needs of organizations that support locating missing persons and to provide aid to organizations that assist victims of domestic violence situations.

The Laundrie family's attorneys didn't reply to Insider's requests for comment.

NBC News reported in May that a wrongful death lawsuit had been filed against the estate of Laundrie.

According to NBC News, the complaint was filed by Reilly on behalf of Schmidt in the state of Florida.

Nichole and Joseph Petito incurred funeral and burial expenses as a direct and proximate consequence of Brian Laundrie's conduct, and they have suffered a loss of care and comfort.

The lawsuit Petito's parents filed against Laundrie's parents is unrelated to the settlement, according to Forbes.

In November, Petito's parents filed a $50 million lawsuit against Utah police, saying that an officer who responded to a call about Petito and Laundrie was biased against them.

"Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt want to turn their personal tragedy into a positive event," the statement said. It is their hope that the issues of importance will be brought to the forefront of the public eye.
