There are a lot of rumors surrounding the next iteration of the iPhone, the iPhone 15. We don't expect these devices to drop until fall 2023, but the rumor mill always keeps going.

It won't be until we get closer to the new iPhone season in September that we'll know everything we know. The direction that Apple is likely going to take for the next phone is indicated by the rumors.

The mini was retired after the iPhone 14 came out, despite Apple keeping the mini with the 12 and 13 lineups. It was replaced with the larger iPhone 14 Plus, which was the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but with a 6.1-inch screen instead of a 5.4-inch one.

It is expected that Apple will feature the same lineup of phones as before, with the exception of the Pro and Pro Max models. The standard iPhones should have a 6.1-inch display, while the Plus and Pro models have a 6.7-inch display.

The name of the phone could be different. The Apple Watch Ultra has been compared to the Pro Max by some people.

Those who are waiting for a drastic redesign of the phone may be disappointed, as the phone may look similar to the one that was released last year. The Dynamic Island pill-and-hole cutout was only available to the iPhone 14 Pro models. The first iPhone lineup to eliminate the notch will be the iPhone 15.

There will be four different models of iPhone 15: 6.1-inch iPhone 15, 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus, 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The report suggests that the physical buttons may be replaced by solid state power and volume buttons. The Home button is similar to the one on the iPhone 7. It would use feedback to make it feel like you pressed a button.

There are two Taptic Engines on the left and right sides of the phone if the report is true. Even if the iPhone 15 models were the same size and thickness as the iPhone 14, you would need a case that has open access to the buttons at all times.

iPhone 15 processor and specs

The A16 chip in the iPhone 14 Pro may be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and the A17 chip in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This seems to be the new way in which Apple distinguishes between the standard and Pro models of the phone.

The A17 chips will be manufactured by TSMC using a 3nanometer process. The A17 would be more efficient at power consumption and the heat would be reduced. The A17 chip will have a 15% boost in speed and power, as well as 30% more power savings, compared to the current 5nanometer chips.

There is a report that says the iPhone 15 Pro could get a boost in the amount of memory. The baseline storage may be different depending on the features of the phone. The top-tier storage for the iPhone 15 Pro could be doubled to 2 terabytes.

Despite rumors that Apple could be building its own modem chips, the efforts so far have not yielded any results. There is a chance that Apple will use modem chips in the next iteration of the device.

The only thing we know about the camera is that Apple is working on periscope lens technology, which could be used on the larger model of the phone.

If you have a periscope lens, you can get optical zoom that goes beyond what is currently available. A periscope lens would be an improvement over the current iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max which only go up to 3x optical zoom. The larger iPhone 15 Pro Max may be the only one that gets that periscope function.

I think the rumored iPhone 15 Pro series's adoption of an 8P lens won't likely come true.

The number of elements within the lens material is what is referred to as an 8P camera. It's possible that having another element in the lens could help with image distortion. This doesn't seem to be happening with the iPhone 15 according to the author.

European regulations are trying to reduce the amount of e-waste by requiring a common charge for all electronics. The deadline for Apple to switch over to USB-C and eliminate Lightning would be by 2024, but Apple could get a head start on that by moving the iPhone 15 over to the new standard in 2023. It is highly likely, but Apple could hold off until the end of the century.

It would bring Apple's phone in line with the iPad and MacBook lineups, which have mostly been usingusb-C for a long time. The last iPad model that still used Apple's proprietary charging port was the most recent iPad (2022).

In addition to the EU's ruling, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also seems confident in the iPhone 15's switch toUSB-C, saying in mid-November that his "latest survey indicates all 2H23 new iPhones will abandon Lightning and change tousb-c."

I predict that 15 Pro & 15 Pro Max will support at least USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3. This spec upgrade means the wired transfer and video output user experience will significantly improve.

— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) November 17, 2022

The only phones that will benefit from the change are the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus won't have the fastest transfer speeds, but they will have ausb-c port, which will allow for faster transfers.

If Apple follows its usual launch schedule, we should expect the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro to be announced in September. The current prices for the iPhone 14 lineup are $799 for the iPhone 14, $899 for the iPhone 14 Plus, and $999 for the iPhone 14 Pro.

We should have the same prices for the iPhone 15 if the economy stays the same.
