According to a settlement reached after Petito's parents filed a wrongful death suit, the estate of Brian Laundrie must pay $3 million to the Petito family.
The wrongful death of Petito's daughter caused her parents to suffer a loss of care and comfort, according to a lawsuit filed in May.
Patrick J. Reilly said in a statement to Forbes that Laundrie did not have $3 million before he died.
The money will be used to support organizations that work with missing persons cases and domestic violence situations.
According to Forbes, no amount of money is enough to compensate the Petito family for their daughter's death.
Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, the parents of Laundrie, are being sued by Petito's parents, who claim the Laundries tried to help him flee as investigators searched for Petit.
A lawyer for the Laundries didn't reply to a request from Forbes.
Petito's family filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against the police department in Utah, saying that officers who pulled over Petito and Laundrie just weeks before her death could have saved her.
After Laundrie returned home alone from what was supposed to be a cross-country road trip, Petito was reported missing. According to Petito's parents, the last time they heard from Petito was August 25 and they believe text messages from her phone were sent by Laundrie pretending to be Petito. After not returning home for three days, Laundrie was reported missing. The body of Petito was found in Wyoming. She died of strangulation, according to the coroner. The body of Laundrie was found with a gunshot wound to the head in October. He claimed responsibility for Petito's death in a journal found near his body, according to the FBI.
