Stephen A. blasts Mark Davis' defense of Josh McDaniels (2:52)

Stephen A. Smith didn't like what Mark Davis said about the Raiders losing record. There is a time and a place for it.

Mark Davis gave his support to first-year coach Josh McDaniels in the wake of the Raiders' poor start to the season.

According to Davis, "Rome wasn't built in a day." The players exhaled as a result of Davis' vote of confidence.

Carr said that it did. Being here for nine years and everything that we've seen and been through, and some tragedies, right? Mr. Davis feels that way. He believes in them and he loves Josh and Dave.

After Sunday's 25-20 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Carr needed a number of times to catch his breath and fight back tears at the podium. The Broncos are playing the Raiders on Sunday.

Carr said that Davis' endorsement gave them a chance to say yes. Just get better. Being a better football team is something that needs to be worked on. Let's win all these games. Let's just be a better football team and try and do everything that's possible.

Trust that process, that's what it kind of told us. We have time during the season to know who our leader is and that gives us confidence as a football team. When he came out and did that, he said, "Whew, thank goodness." That sort of thing.

The Raiders' slow start a year after their 14-7 finish under interim coach Rich Bisaccia and then- GM Mike Mayock, one that resulted in just the franchise's second postseason appearance since 2002, led to questions about the future of coach Josh McDaniels. After winning six Super Bowl rings with the New England Pats, Josh McDaniels came to Las Vegas and has been a head coach for just seven years.

Adams said he hoped Davis would be patient with the new regime and its process.

"You look at the history of this place, I don't think a playoff game has been won in over two decades here," Adams said. The Raiders lost a wild-card game at the Houston Texans and a wild-card game at the CincinnatiBengals in the last two years.

Adams said there was no magic coach that would change that. I think that Josh is doing a good job and he deserves that. Some of the greatest coaches that this league has seen have had some tough times and I'm sure they didn't all start their careers with a new organization. Davis doing that is a good move. It's good for the guys as well.

Carr said that it's not built in just one day. It's really not. There's no denying their success and what his belief is and what Josh's belief is. They have been able to do what they have been able to do.
