The Brooklyn Nets could have All-Star guard Kyrie Irving back in time for Sunday's game against the Memphis Grizzles, according to sources.
Irving will miss his eighth game in a row on Thursday night in Portland, but he is nearing the end of his two-week suspension, according to sources.
According to the National Basketball Players Association executive director, Kyrie is continuing his journey of dialogue. The impact of his voice and actions in the Jewish community has weighed heavily on him. He's dedicated to bettering himself and increasing his level of understanding and he doesn't accept antisemitism in any form. He wants his words and actions to correspond with his pursuit of truth and knowledge.
Sources said that the union and the Nets worked with Irving to come up with his own remedies to end his suspension. Sources said that the Nets and the league wanted Irving to take ownership of the process, which is what he did.
Irving is carrying out a minimum five game suspension without pay for his failure to apologize and condemn his social media link to a film with antisemitic material.
After two news conferences and a public statement issued with the Nets that didn't include an apology or a condemnation, Irving posted an apology on his social media accounts.
Nets owner Joe Tsai and commissioner Adam Silver both said that they didn't think Irving was antisemitic after meeting with him.
At the time of Irving's suspension, the Nets said his "failure to disavow antisemitism when given a clear opportunity to do so is deeply disturbing, is against the values of our organization, and constitutes detrimental conduct to the team."
The union told NBA players in a memo on Friday that "Kyrie's rights, and the rights of all future players, have been protected at every turn."
A recent effort to deepen understanding and open clear lines of communication was described by the NBPA.
A loss to the Kings on Tuesday night was the Nets' fourth loss in a row without Irving. Boston is in first place in the Eastern Conference with a 13-5 record.
Irving is leading the Nets with 26.9 points, 5.1 Rebounds and 5.1 Assists.
