The Commanders did not have to make a quarterback decision. Taylor Heinicke will continue to be the starting quarterback.
Washington coach Ron Rivera said that despite being cleared to start throwing, he hasn't yet been designated to return to practice. Heinicke will continue to start because of that. When Wentz is ready to practice and play, Rivera doesn't know.
Heinicke will start at quarterback for Washington on Sunday against the Houston Texans.
Rivera said they have time. We'll see what happens this week with Heinicke. How it affects the team is more important than the individual. Having a good situation is a good thing.
He was placed on injured reserve after breaking his finger. As a backup to Heinicke, there's a chance that Wentz could be activated before Sunday. Rivera said he would want to have practice time before he made him active.
Heinicke has posted a better quarterback rating in his four starts than in his six starts. He had played in a different system in the past and had to learn a new one. He was forced to hold the ball longer than usual due to shaky pass protection. He was fired many times.
Washington's offense is better due to the fact that the run game is more important and the tight end group is healthier. Heinicke has thrown five touchdown passes to four interceptions, but he has captured the locker room's respect because of his style of play and the fact that he was out of football for two years. Heinicke plays with no fear.
Heinicke doesn't worry about having one more game to prove that he should keep his job.
Heinicke doesn't see it that way. I'm doing everything I can to prepare for Houston, because I was told I was up this week. Right now, the team is playing well. I want to keep this going and see what happens.
