As he prepares to launch his third run for the presidency, former President Donald Trump has made executing drug dealers a central part of his message, embracing a favorite tactic of authoritarian regimes.

"We are going to be asking everyone who sells drugs, gets caught selling drugs, to receive the death penalty for their heinous acts," Trump said Tuesday to cheers from his supporters at Mar-a-Lago. He announced his plans to challenge Biden in a speech that lasted more than an hour.

After a meeting with Singapore's leaders, Trump mentioned that he would like to execute drug dealers. The focus on the topic as he kicks off his bid shows how likely he is to use his instincts for authoritarianism if he wins the presidency again.

He is not going to hide the root of his proposal. The idea was given to Trump by the dictator of China.

I asked the president of China if he had a drug problem. The problem was solved by "quick trials" where "by the end of the day you're executed" according to Trump.

They have no drug problem according to Trump. It is worth noting that Trump is a serial liar, that his recollection of his conversation with Xi may not be reliable, and that China has a drug problem.

The death penalty for drug dealers is usually suggested by Trump. He was unsure if the American public was ready for it.

It is not likely that Trump would implement such a proposal. The idea of a one-day trial for anyone accused of dealing drugs was taken aback by the Republicans in Congress.

"I respect the fact that the president speaks candidly about these matters, but I hope that he would allow me to share my insightful opinions about."

When the idea was brought up, several Republicans in Congress said they hadn't heard of it.

The congressman said that it was a lot to think about.

Rep. Joe Wilson said that was not a policy he knew of.

The congressman said it seemed a little extreme. Hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost over the last couple of years.

Lindsey Graham supports the death penalty for dealers of Fentanyl. He thinks that the idea of a drug called Fentanyl should be on the table.

Drug overdose deaths have gone up in recent years, and both Democrats and Republicans want to crack down on the powerful opiate, called Fentanyl. Manchin is a Democratic senator from the state of West Virginia. Over the objection of liberal groups who want Biden's administration to take a public health focused approach to opiate addiction and roll back the war on drugs, Va. and Rob Portman have urged the administration to permanently list Fentanyl as a Schedule 1 drug.

The death penalty is rarely used for murderers. The Supreme Court found that the death penalty is excessive for crimes that don't cause death.

Iran and Saudi Arabia have executed people for drug crimes. The former president of the Philippines has been praised by Trump. More than 12,000 people died as a result of Duerte's anti-drug policies.

The head of the anti-drug division of the Philippines' national police force admitted the "shock and awe" strategy had done little to cut supply or demand for illegal drugs.
