Sir Alex Ferguson's intervention resulted in him choosing Manchester United instead of moving to Manchester City.

Other clubs were interested in signing him, but he followed his heart and returned to United, despite them not being in the running for him.

In an interview with Piers Morgan on Talk TV, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner claimed that a number of people at United were trying to oust him.

The lack of investment in the 13 years since his departure, the appointment of a new interim manager, and the attitude of young players were all questioned by the man who left.

It was close. They spoke a lot and they tried to get me. "I said so." My past is in Manchester United. It made the difference when you're feeling the same as before. Sir Alex Ferguson is also included. In that moment, the heart speaks loudly.

Talking with Ferguson was the key. I don't think Manchester City was close. I believe I made a conscious decision. I don't think I'll ever regret it.

Sir Alex Ferguson was the most important person. He told me that it was not possible for me to come to Manchester City. I said "OK, boss".

I repeat, I was with conscience that it was a good decision.

Nobody expected it to happen. In 72 hours, things changed. Not only Man City, but other clubs as well. It was surprising that Manchester United wasn't part of that team.

Cristiano Ronaldo: I feel betrayed
In a 90-minute interview with Piers Morgan Uncensored on TalkTV, Cristiano Ronaldo claimed head coach Erik ten Hag and others want him out of Old Trafford

'United have stopped on a clock - it surprised me'

After hitting out at the club for a lack of investment in infrastructure, he changed his stance on United.

Man Utd calm about Ronaldo interview

Manchester United will not make a decision on Cristiano Ronaldo’s future until they see the full interview with Piers Morgan and remain calm about the situation. Sky Sports News understands that Man United don’t accept some of the criticism Ronaldo made in the clips that have been aired so far. Ronaldo criticised the club for a lack of investment in the 13 years since he left Old Trafford but sources have insisted United have invested in their facilities – notably the training ground, restaurant and swimming pool.

Ronaldo was also critical of Erik ten Hag but again sources insist Ronaldo was treated with respect by the club and the manager – in news conferences, Erik ten Hag always maintained Ronaldo had been given time off to deal with family matters.

It was when I joined Manchester United. I didn't think everything would be the same. I was surprised because I saw nothing different.

I thought they stopped on a clock.

The progress at United was not good. They follow the rest of the world in order to compare with Real Madrid and other teams. I was surprised by the technology in terms of training, nutrition and recovery.

I was surprised by the fact that Manchester is behind in my opinion. I think a club with this dimensions should be the top of the tree. They aren't in that tier. They can reach a top level in the next few years.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson left, there was no progress in the club.

'I never saw Rangnick as the boss'

The former United manager was brought in as an interim manager after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked.

He said he had never heard of the German manager before and felt he was never really the boss at United.

He assumed the job, so we have to call him that. "All the coaches that I had in my career, I called them boss because if they assumed the job we have to call in that way."

In the end, I didn't see him as the boss because I didn't agree with him.

He said that the coaching team didn't know what they were doing. They were familiar with the club. They weren't aware of the history of the club. I was surprised more.

A top manager should be brought in when Ole Solskjaer is fired.

'Solskjaer did a good job, you need more time'

The former United boss, Solskjaer, was said to have done a good job by the Portuguese player.

"I'm a big fan of Solskjr," saidRonaldo. He was a top person because what I keep inside my heart is the heart of the person. Ole is a great person.

It's difficult. I think he did a good job after Sir Alex Ferguson.

You don't have enough time." He is going to be a great coach. It was enjoyable. I was very happy to work with him.

'I'm an example... young players are not the same anymore'

The younger players of this generation of football are not the same as when he first came through, according toRonaldo.

He said that he is an example for young players to follow because he grew up with former United players.

I prefer to be an example, so I don't like giving advice. He said that he's an example.

I do the same things in the morning. I'm the one who arrives first and the last one to leave. I think the information speaks for itself. I like to follow by example.

The younger players are not the same as my generation. We can't blame them because they're part of the life.

The new technology distracts them. They are not the same as when you listen from one side and the other side, so we have two ears.

It's not surprising to me. If they have the best examples in front of eyes, and if they don't, at least copy what they did, it's a shame.

I looked to see the best players when I was younger, and that's why I have. I see these guys and I learn from them because I take care of my body.
