The University of Virginia student accused of killing three members of the football team and wounding two other students will be held without bond.

During his first court appearance, Jones did not enter a plea. The judge appointed a public defender for the time being after Jones told the judge he would hire an attorney.

A status hearing will be held on December 8.

A group of about two dozen people, including Jones, went on a field trip to see a play in the nation's capital. Authorities say Jones opened fire on the bus, killing four people and wounding two others, one of them a football player.

Jones has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder, two counts of malicious wounding, and additional gun-related charges.

Several days of mourning have been set off by the violence at the state's flagship public university. The school canceled its final home football game of the season on Saturday and classes resumed on Wednesday.

The university said in a news release that a decision hasn't been made about the final game of the season.

Jones has been in jail since Monday. The case against him is being handled by the county's attorney.

The motive behind the shooting was not fully understood, according to the university president. There has been no new information offered in the court documents.

Jones was a member of the football team for one semester.

Jones' father apologized to the families of the people he killed.

Eric Swensen, a health system spokesman, said that one of the students who was hospitalized was released Tuesday.

The family of a running back on the team said he had a second surgery Tuesday.
