Gary is 36 years old and retired from football.
During his time at the club, he won eight major honours, including two premier league titles and two FA cups.
He started his career at Villa and went on to play in 61 international matches.
"I created some incredible memories by achieving things I once dreamed of," said the man.
As I make the decision to hang up my boots, I can honestly say I gave it everything I had.
He captained the side on five occasions, as well as playing for England at the World Cup and European Championships.
He was let go by Bournemouth at the end of last season.
The privilege of captaining my county in an FA Cup winning team will stay with me for the rest of my life.
It is difficult to stop playing. I've trained for 20 years to be in the best shape for matchday to help the teams I've played for be successful.
After considering my options, I feel it's time to move on to the next phase of my career.
