Donald Trump entered the US presidential race on Tuesday, just as many Republicans are preparing to move away from their longstanding standard bearer.

The most read from the news agency.

The first major contender from either party to formally declare was Donald Trump, who filed federal paperwork minutes before his announcement.

In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States.

The timing is worse for Republicans. In last week's mid-term elections, candidates endorsed by Trump flopped in key races, as voters rejected election-deniers and others with extreme positions on social issues.

It cost Republicans their chance to regain the US Senate and left them well short of the majority they wanted in the House, though they were within one seat of gaining control on Tuesday night.

Since then, Trump has fallen from unquestioned party leader to anchor dragging down the GOP. Many key Republicans and donors want him to make way for a new standard bearer like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who was reelected last week.

He often complains about what he sees as America's decline without him at the helm and said, "We are here tonight to proclaim it doesn't have to be this way."

President Joe Biden has said he will seek re-election in 2024, but he hasn't made a formal announcement. Biden said that Trump failed America.

Trump wanted to stop other Republicans from campaigning for the White House. Frank Luntz, a Republican strategist and pollster, said that after the disappointing elections, potential Trump challengers will be more confident.

Potential Trump challengers include Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, former Vice President Mike Pence, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.

According to a person familiar with the situation, Chris LaCivita, Susie Wiles, and Brian Jack are some of the strategists who will be leading Trump's campaign in the years to come.

He was a top adviser to the congressman. The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign damaged the Kerry campaign. Jack worked on Trump's campaign.

According to some analysts, Trump has been pushed into a corner and is trying to shift blame for GOP losses onto McConnell. He manipulated Youngkin's name to make it sound Chinese, mocked the governor as "Ron DeSanctimonius", and threatened to reveal unflattering information about the governor if he ran for president.

The news conference was held in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

It is the nature of it when you are leading and getting things done.

At the end of the day, I would tell people to check out the score from last Tuesday night, a veiled reference to his resounding victory.

With eight races still being decided, the record of Trump's endorsed candidates who were on the ballot last Tuesday was 236-38. At least six US Senate races, 12 House races and 11 governorships were lost by the former president's hand-picked candidates.

It is not known how Trump's legal situation will affect a potential candidacy. He faces multiple investigations into his removal of classified documents from the White House as well as his involvement in attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election that resulted in the deadly insurrection. Trump and his children have been accused of inflating the value of their real estate company's assets.

Despite the GOP losses, Trump has a hard-core group of supporters who will support him no matter what. Trump was able to win the Republican nomination with a crowded field because of those voters.

If you start with less than 35%, it is hard for someone to beat you.
