Donald Trump said Tuesday night that he's making another run for president, setting off what's expected to be a fiery and highly competitive 2024 Republican presidential contest.

In a speech at his Mar-A-Lago resort, Trump said that the U.S. was in decline under President Joe Biden.

This will be Trump's third run for the White House, following his 2020 loss to Biden and his 2016 victory over Clinton.

The first major Republican candidate to launch a presidential campaign is Donald Trump.

Shortly before his speech Tuesday night, Trump filed paperwork with the FEC.

Two years ago, we were a great nation, and soon we will be a great nation again.

Key Background

Trump has been the leader of the Republican Party for six years, but he enters the race as a weakened candidate after losing several high-profile endorsements. Many political observers have blamed Trump and his insistence that Republicans continue to push false claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election as a reason Republicans fell short of expectations and appeared on course for a slim House majority despite predictions of a "red wave." After winning reelection in a landslide last week, Ron DeSantis is gaining steam as the favorite to win the GOP's nomination for president in the 2020 election. Some of Trump's former supporters, including former Vice President Mike Pence and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, are considering running for the Republican nomination in the next presidential election.

In 2020 the first votes are expected to be in the Iowa caucuses, which took place on February 3. The debates will probably start next year.

Tangent

A trove of highly classified documents found during an FBI raid of Mar-A-Lago, which could lead to federal criminal charges, is one of the legal baggage that Trump enters the race with. Federal prosecutors investigating the January 6 riot have asked questions about Trump's attempt to remain in office after the 2020 election, and state prosecutors are looking into Trump and his allies' push to overturn Biden's win in Georgia. He is being sued by the New York Attorney General for allegedly misvaluing his assets for financial gain.

What To Watch For

CNN reported that federal prosecutors have held talks about possibly needing a special counsel to oversee the probes because of fears the Biden Administration could use the DOJ to attack a political rival.
