Ron Rivera emotional in locker room after Commanders' win (0:40)

After Washington won for the first time since Rivera's mother's death, Ron Rivera cried. There is a time and a place for it.

Ron Rivera isn't sure when the Washington Commanders will decide on a quarterback.

Rivera isn't sure if he'll be activated from injured reserve this week after missing the last four games with a broken ring finger. He was supposed to be out for four weeks. If that is the case, then he could be on the field this week.

Even if he is available, Washington will stick with his replacement, Taylor Heinicke. Heinicke started and led the Commanders to a big upset of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Rivera said he needs to talk to the trainers and Scott Turner and Ken Zampese about the condition of the quarterback.

After meeting with the players involved, Rivera would inform the team. It wouldn't happen until wednesday morning.

Rivera said that you have to look at the team's vibe. There are a lot of things going on.

The Colts traded the second overall pick in the 2016 draft to Washington in the off-season. The teams swapped draft picks in April of last year, with the Commanders getting a third-round choice in 2022. If he plays 70% of the snaps, he becomes a second-round pick.

He was placed on injured reserve after breaking his ring finger in a victory over the Bears.

He led a late drive to win against the Green Bay Packers, as well as a last-second march to win at Indianapolis, in addition to Monday night's upset.

Heinicke has posted a better quarterback rating in his four starts than in his six starts. He had played in a different system in the past and had to learn a new one. He was forced to hold the ball longer than usual due to shaky pass protection. He was fired many times.

Rivera said that you look at what is best for the team. You treat everyone the same but you treat everyone according to the team. The decision will be based on the team. I will commit to whoever starts. They should not be looking over their shoulder.

Rivera didn't say what decision would be made for the rest of the season.

Heinicke said he's not concerned about any decision after Monday's win.

In the past, I have said that we brought Carson in to be a starter. Heinicke will be ready to go in if his number is called. Let's leave whatever decision they make. It's great if I'm going to back up Carson next week. Let's just win. Let's keep winning, no matter what.

The locker room supports him. Two years ago, at this time, he was sleeping on his sister's couch as he waited for his chance to be signed by Washington. He started and played well in a 31-23 loss in the playoffs against the Bucs.

Terry McLaurin said that he has been great for the team since he arrived. He plays with no fear. He is going to get the yards with his legs. We are going to be in the right situations. You feel good with a guy there. A lot of people want to know how tall he is. It's not possible to measure what's in his chest.
