Scott in a letter to colleagues promised "bold change" if elected leader, claiming existing leadership is out of touch with voters and at fault for low Republican turnout in last week's elections.

The first challenge McConnell has faced in 15 years as the Republican Senate leader is not believed to be enough to defeat him.

McConnell told reporters Monday that he has enough support to be elected Senate Republican leader.

Scott understands that he won't get the support of every member of the Conference, but they all have a choice.

Key Background

Republicans failed to win the Senate and appeared on the verge of taking control of the House, falling short of hopes for a "red wave" that would have rebuked President Joe Biden's policies. The path to becoming the next speaker of the House may be rocky if Republicans take the chamber. McCarthy is short of the 218 votes he needs to win the speakership. The House Freedom Caucus is expected to demand the ability to overthrow the speaker in exchange for supporting McCarthy.

Tangent

Donald Trump is going to make a special announcement at Mar-a-Lago. He is expected to announce his candidacy for president on Tuesday. Trump has been blamed for the poor Republican performance in the election.

Kevin McCarthy doesn't have the votes to win the speaker's job.

Conservatives renewed their push to delay Senate leadership elections.

Fox News was blamed for the mid-term results by conservative outlets.
