A judge in Atlanta ruled Tuesday that Georgia's ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy was unconstitutional because it was signed into law too late.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney decided that the ban on abortions after a doctor can detect cardiac activity was unconstitutional.

The law went into effect three weeks after the Supreme Court legalized abortion.

A group of doctors and advocacy groups filed a lawsuit to overturn the law, which they argue forces pregnant women to give birth.

The state argued that the Supreme Court's decision in June erased the right to abortion.
