The National Football League, the Los Angeles Clippers, and a mat company are being sued by a Denver Broncos player who tore his knee in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The 25-year-old was sued for damages that included lost bonuses and future earning potential.

Patrick was carried off the field and into the sideline area when he tried to tackle the punt returner. Patrick said he stepped on mats to avoid the official who was watching television timeouts.

The lawsuit states that stepping on the mats caused his knee to bend and he will be out for the rest of the season.

William M. Berman is the attorney for his client.

Player safety should be a top priority for the owners of the league. The National Football League needs to do everything in its power to protect its players from non-contact injuries.

The stadium should have the state-of-the-art equipment to protect for player safety and not use the type of $100 mats that you would expect to see in a restaurant kitchen because of Patrick's injuries.

Patrick had one tackle in the 19-16 victory for the Bolts.

The Eastern Kentucky product appeared in 12 games for the Broncos last season as well as five games this season before he was injured.

At times this season, player safety at SoFi Stadium has been a concern with Seattle Seahawks head coach PeteCarroll and Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp among those who have raised issues about the artificial turf playing surface.

The comments came after the two players were injured on non-contact plays.
