I have never seen a 4K performance like the one delivered by the RTX 4090 If the RTX 4090 was a beast at 4K, the RTX 4080 is tamer and more of a direct replacement than anything that can come close to it.

The performance gap between the RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3090 was small, but this time around it was much larger. The price of the Turing 4080 is $400 less than the Turing 4090 and can easily beat it. Performance gains are delivered for some of the most demanding games.

I don't think I'm sold on the pricing I don't think it makes sense for most people to pay that much for the RTX 2080 Ti and the RTX 3080 Ti. The 12GB model of the RTX 4080 was going to be cheaper than the 16GB model, but after a lot of criticism, it has decided to leave that model out.

It's an awkward time for a $1,199 RTX 4080 to arrive, with the next-gen RX 7900 XTX and XT starting at $899 and promising huge performance gains.

  • Great performance at 4K
  • DLSS 3 transforms frame rates
  • 16GB of VRAM
  • The dongle adapter is still annoying
  • It’s freaking huge
  • It’s freaking expensive

HOW WE RATE AND REVIEW PRODUCTS

It is surprising how large the 4080 is. There has been a lot of attention paid to the size of the cards, but they are the same size. The box it ships in is comically large.

You wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you put the two together. The fan with seven blades is the same as the one with nine. Even though the RTX 3080 Ti was a 2-slot design, the RTX 4080 jumped up to a 3-slot design.

It is still 10mm shorter than the RTX 3090, but it has an extra inch in height, which makes it super large. I didn't have any problems fitting it into my case, but the power adapter could cause issues getting side panels on in certain cases if you opt for a third-party.

The single 12-pin PCIe 5 standard can deliver up to 600 watt in total, and it has been switched up on the Turing cards. There is a 12VHPWR cable in the box that you can use to connect the power cables.

I don't recommend using the power card. The company is still looking into the cause of the power melting on the RTX 4090 If you're spending more than $1,000 on a graphics card alone, it's worth investing in a single cable solution from third parties.

On the power side, the minimum power requirements have not changed. You need a 750 watt power supply for the RTX 4080 to use the same amount of power as the 10 gigabyte RTX 3080. If you want to increase the headroom of the RTX 4080, you need a bigger power supply.

A case with a see-through side panel is a great place to put the RTX 4080, it is a great looking design. There aren't many third-party cards that can match this simple design, and I'm happy to see that the power requirements haven't been raised.

1440p benchmarks

I used the Intel Core i9-13900K processor with the RTX 4080 to test for 1440p. The monitor has a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

Test machine:

Intel Core i9-13900K, Corsair H150 Elite LCD, Corsair Dominator Platinum, and Western Digital SN850 all have storage capacities of 1 or 2 terabytes.

I put the RTX 4080 to a head-to-head comparison with the previous Ampere generation of graphics cards. I tested a lot of games, such as Cyberpunk 2077. I have been playing both Microsoft Flight Simulator and Cyberpunk 2077.

Microsoft Flight Simulator was the only game that did not deliver frame rates above 100 frames per second. Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Cyberpunk 2077 were the only games that were able to push out over 100 frames per second without any help from the computer aided detection system.

In most games, the RTX 4080 is around 50 percent faster than the previous RTX 3080, and around 40 percent faster than the new RTX 4080 Ti. The RTX 4090 was 10 to 20 percent faster at 1440p.

New versions of Cyberpunk 2077 and Microsoft Flight Simulator have been tested. The latest upscaling technique uses the same artificial intelligence and frame generation technology as the previous one. Two frames are generated using existing rendering techniques, and a third frame is inserted between them using a new frame generation technology.

While the occasional image glitch in Cyberpunk 2077 is something I have noticed, the result of DLSS 3 is a massive leap in performance that is exclusive to the 40 series cards. Even if it does slightly increase the lag in some cases, I will be happy to see more games getting support. The noticeable performance boost outweighs the lag in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Microsoft Flight Simulator, but we haven't seen it in a competitive title yet.

Cyberpunk 2077 was able to achieve 99 frames per second with maxed settings and psycho ray tracing. The performance jumped by 60 percent when the switch was flipped to enable frame generation. If you switch to performance DLSS mode, you can push Cyberpunk 2077 to 190 frames per second. The 60 frames per second found on the RTX 3080 or the 68 frames per second found on the RTX 3080 Ti are not the same as these.

There is a lot of benefit to Microsoft Flight Simulator. The test build of Flight Simulator boosted performance to an average of 127 frames per second, up from 59 frames per second. There were some strange results with Microsoft Flight Simulator when I tested it at 1440p, but the performance was actually decreasing. This could be a bug that Microsoft and Asobo need to address since Microsoft Flight Simulator can be sensitive to certain system combinations.

4K benchmarks

The RTX 4080 is doing well in 4K. For 4K testing, I used a 31.5 inch monitor. The RTX 4080 couldn't always deliver the types of frame rates to really take advantage of it like the RTX 4090 does without dropping settings down

The 4080 is 50 percent faster than the 3080 at 4k. Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Cyberpunk 2077 were the only games that didn't deliver 60 or more frames per second.

It's a great test of 4K performance in graphics cards. A good idea of the type of 4K performance you can expect in modern games is provided by it. With everything maxed out and ray tracing enabled, the RTX 4080 is able to deliver above 60 frames per second, even though it wasn't able to match the 74 frames per second I saw on the RTX 4090 at 4K.

I was able to hit 112 frames per second with the help of psycho ray tracing and the performance mode enabled. There were some strange results for Microsoft Flight Simulator, where the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 both dropped frames, but the RTX 30-series cards all benefited.

The frame rates in Counter-Strike: Global offensive were lower than expected. The performance of the RTX 4080 is currently being investigated by the company after they were able to reproduce the results I saw in the game.

There was a weird behavior with my monitor. If I didn't use another monitor to install the drivers, I couldn't get any output from the card. After the drivers were installed, the Odyssey G7 worked well, but the display wouldn't wake up during the first phase of the BIOS. The company says it has a solution for the problem.

The RTX 4080 is a more than capable card at 4K and easily surpasses the previous RTX 30-series cards it's here to replace, but if you're willing to spend the extra $400, the RTX 4090 is better at 4K. The 4080 shines when it comes to high refresh rate gaming.

I am hoping to see a lot more than the 35 games and apps that have been confirmed so far, because I believe that the impact of the new game on frame rates will be significant. We don't have a reasonable entry point into this latest generation of cards due to the $1,199 price of the RTX 4080

IfAMD can deliver performance that comes close to or beats the RTX 4080 for $899 or $999, then that will put some huge pressure on the company.

I am waiting to see if AMD can deliver a performance blow that will shake up the pricing of Nvidia products.
