The Emergency SOS via Satellite feature will be available to customers in the United States and Canada starting today. After the announcement, Apple gave a closer look at how the feature works to a few people.
Apple has not said what will happen after the first two years of the service. To help users understand how it works, Apple has created a demo mode that allows users to experience the feature without having it active. There are some videos that give a closer look at the demo mode.
Emergency SOS via Satellite works by using technology built into all iPhone 14 models that allow them to connect to satellites in orbit around the earth to contact emergency services when a user is outside. Apple has built a new interface that allows users to send messages to emergency services over satellite using a questionnaire that asks critical questions for first responders.
If a user has a Medical ID, the emergency services will send a message with their location, altitude, and battery level. The messages are either sent to a center of Apple trained specialists who can call emergency services or directly to the dispatch center. See our guide for a more in depth look at the feature.
