A retired judge was appointed by a New York court to look over some of the Trump Organization's financial statements as part of a lawsuit.

Jones was recommended by both Trump and James to be the independent monitor in the case.

In recent years, Jones has been involved in a number of Trump-related lawsuits. As part of the criminal investigation of Michael Cohen, she was appointed as a special master to identify potential attorney-client privilege claims.

Jones was tapped to be the special master to review the seized materials from Rudy Giuliani.

CNBC requested comment from lawyers for Trump on the appointment in James' case.

James was given the go-ahead by the New York Supreme Court to appoint a third-party entity to look over a range of Trump Organization financial statements.

The monitor will make sure that the company complies with the order from the court. The judge was warned by James that the Trump Organization appeared to be skirting New York rules by restructuring its business out of state. On the day of the lawsuit, the Trump Organization registered a new entity called Trump Organization II.

The attorneys for Trump opposed the AG's request for the watchdog, saying it was a politically motivated attempt to nationalize a highly successful private enterprise.

The claims were completely without merit, according to the ruling. He wrote that a monitor is different from a receiver who would take control of the entire organization.

The defendants were ordered to give the monitor with financial statements, statements of financial condition, asset valuation disclosures and other disclosures.

Within two weeks of her appointment, he ordered them to give the monitor a full and accurate description of the Trump Organization, its subsidiaries and all other affiliates.

Jones agreed to the appointment in a phone call earlier in the day, according to the order.
