The choice of which ski town is the best is up to the individual. Some people only care about the town with the deepest powder, while others like the town with the best microbreweries and spas.

The mountain is the most important factor to consider when choosing a ski town according to Michael Levine, a skier who has skied at almost 100 resorts around the world.

Levine said that if the skiing doesn't go well, it's not a good ski town. I would rather have a sleeping bag in the back of a truck than in a hotel.

For those of us who aren't as devoted to snow sports as Levine, you can't ignore the apres ski scene in most years.

To find the best ski spots in the nation, we looked for mountain towns that offer something for everyone.

From quaint New England villages to old Gold Rush towns, these are 17 of the best places to hang up your skis.

Ski trips with points and miles are related.

Crested Butte, Colorado

It's not the most visited ski town in Colorado, but its small-town feel and distance from the traffic and crowds of Summit County makes it a worthy contender.

An old coal-mining town turned into a ski destination that gets more than 300 inches of snow each year.

The town is close to the base area and has streets lined with shops and eateries. A great place to grab a meal is the Sunflower Communal Kitchen. The lodge is located in the base area of the resort and is close to the lifts. Families and groups can be accommodated in suites.

The airport is close to the resort. Travelers can avoid spending a day in traffic to get to their destinations by using it.

North Conway, New Hampshire

JOSH LASKIN/THE POINTS GUY

It is one of the best ski towns in the U.S. due to the fact that it is the birthplace of skiing in North America.

There are six downhill ski resorts within a half-hour drive and plenty of lodging options, including the high-end Glen House in Pinkham Notch.

Those who prefer to ski off-piste will find plenty of options thanks to the work of the Granite Backcountry Alliance.

Taos, New Mexico

In addition to a world-class ski resort, Taos is also home to a World Heritage site, distinctive cuisine, and an art culture that is very much related to the history of the Southwest.

The adobe architecture of this ski town makes it stand out from the crowd of other ski towns. The Edelweiss Lodge and Spa is a ski in, ski out property.

Before you call it a night, you can go to La Cueva Cafe to get aShrimp taco.

Vail, Colorado

Whether you're looking for a hill with steep and deep lines or a town with plenty of cocktails and places to shop, you'll find it in Vail.

Everyone needs a rest day after a few days of skiing over 5,200 acres and 3,450 vertical feet. The Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame reopened in the fall of 2018?

There is a European bakery and restaurant in the heart of Vail Village that serves both Austrian and German cuisine.

The Sonnenalp is a German style hotel that combines elements of the Old West with a traditional European ski town.

You need to know what to do at the resort.

Bellingham, Washington

The Pacific Northwest is known for its long, gloomy winters and persistent precipitation, but skiers and snowboarders can go to the mountains to get some snow. Mount Baker has a lot of deep days.

The town of Bellingham is more than an hour away from the mountain, which makes it a great base for exploring Baker's slopes.

If you stop by Lettered Streets Coffeehouse, you can get a cup of coffee and a pastry. The hotel is located on Bellingham Bay.

Ogden, Utah

I am going to be controversial this ski season, but I will praise the man.

The gateway to three resorts totals 11,600 skiable acres with 500 inches of snow. The fact that Ogden is an alternative to Park City and Alta makes it an even better alternative.

The jumping-off point for Powder Mountain is in Ogden, which is also the oldest city in Utah.

You don't have to drive to the ski areas because they are accessible from downtown via public transportation. You can stay at the stylish 15-room Compass Rose Lodge at Snowbasin while you are there.

Jackson, Wyoming

Jackson is home to three ski areas and has a lot of side and back country. Jackson Hole is the most popular among the three resorts.

There are 2,500 skiable acres on the mountain. Snow King or Grand Targhee are better for avoiding crowds.

The 96-room Cloudveil is part of the Marriott Autograph Collection and offers a mix of rustic cabin and modern amenities.

Downtown Jackson has cafes, restaurants, bars, boutiques and art galleries. You can sip drinks atop horse saddles at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar when night falls.

Telluride, Colorado

Located between a number of peaks in the San Juan Mountains is the central area of this old Victorian mining town that is a national historic landmark district.

It is a great place to stay for a ski vacation because it is full of gourmet restaurants, boutiques and art galleries.

The high quality of the resort will make you more focused on powder turns than buying a jacket.

The Butcher and Baker Cafe is a good place to fuel up before you go skiing. The Dunton Town House is a great place to stay if you want to stay with some history or have a nice meal.

Credit cards that can be used on ski trips are related.

Bend, Oregon

It is a great place to enjoy a few hours of powder in the morning, world-class rock climbing in the afternoon and an evening of golf all in the same day.

The city tends to get less precipitation than Mount Bachelor, which gets more than 400 inches of snow a year.

Beer lovers will be happy to know that the city of Bend is known as "Beer City USA" and has a wide range of beers to choose from.

Waitsfield, Vermont

Waitsfield is located in the Mad River Valley and is an alternative to Killington and Stowe. The Mad Bus will usually offer free service around the region during the winter.

Sugarbush and Mad River Glen both get a lot of snow each year.

The Sugarbush Inn is located at the base of Sugarbush, which makes it a great place to stay. The Pitcher Inn is a great place to stay in Warren.

Blue Stone has pizza, beer, and Mexican food. The Waitsfield location of Lawson's Finest Liquids is renowned for its New England-styleIPAs and is one of the reasons why a trip to Vermont isn't complete without a stop there.

Durango, Colorado

It's a small town north of the New Mexico border that gets overshadowed by resorts close to Denver. The town is a great jumping off point for Purgatory, a smaller resort with a lot of challenging terrain for more experienced skiers.

You can find a number of places to lay your head in Durango, which is home to a number of breweries. It's a good idea for travelers to visit before some of the more popular ski towns.

Truckee, California

KATE ABRAHAM/PALISADES TAHOE

With an average of 275 days of sunshine, 400 inches of annual snowfall and 12 downhill resorts within a 10-mile radius, it's no wonder that skiers from across the country choose to ski here.

Beer and pizza fans should go to Old Town Tap, while wine lovers should go to Uncorked.

You can ditch the car for the night at the historic Truckee Hotel, which is located in the center of town.

The Mammoth Mountain ski area is a great place to go after the winter is over. There is a high concentration of downhill resorts in the area.

The review of the Westin Monache Resort is related.

Stowe, Vermont

Many people think of Stowe as the ski capital of the east.

In addition to the 314 inches of snow that are dumped onto 485 skiable acres annually, the town is home to one of the best micro breweries in the country.

If you want to sample some of Vermont's finest beers, you can treat yourself to a spa day at the ski resort. The Idyltime Brewing Company is close to the village center and has a housemade beer and a burger.

If you want to explore new terrain after a few days on the mountain, you can head over to Smugglers' Notch.

It's the best annual ski pass.

Breckenridge, Colorado

The highest chairlift in North America is located in the town of Breckenridge. You don't have to feel bad about taking a rest day because the town is full of great places to eat and drink.

Travelers who want the convenience of a ski-in, gondola-out resort in a secluded setting can stay at the MountainThunder Lodge.

If you are on vacation, stop by the Breckenridge Distillery, which claims to be the highest distillery in the world. The Summit Stage bus is free to use. The latter is a great ski resort for families.

There is a reason why this is the year to purchase an epic ski pass.

There is a bustling small town at the edge of Glacier National Park. Thanks to the Great Northern Railway, the town was established in the early 20th century.

While Big Sky Mountain Resort gets a lot of attention, it is not the best place to visit. Almost a decade of steady improvements have taken place at the resort.

There are many fine dining establishments and ski shops on the streets. You can get a cup of coffee at one of the Montana Coffee Traders locations. You can stay at the Grouse Mountain Lodge, which is close to downtown.

Killington, Vermont

Killington is the largest ski resort east of the Mississippi. Killington has more than 1,500 acres of skiable terrain and a 3,050 foot vertical drop.

The mountain is usually the first to open on the East Coast. The resort wants to open in November. The Wobbly Barn Steakhouse and Nightclub is a Killington staple and often hosts live music events and parties.

Aspen, Colorado

Aspen's reputation seems inflated, but this 20th century mining town continues to evolve.

There are plenty of varied terrains at the four resorts of the Aspen Skiing Company. When the weather cooperates, the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport makes it easy to get to Aspen.

The W Aspen is located on the site of the former Sky Hotel and is a great place for travelers to stay. There is only one ski-in/ski-out access in Aspen.

Betula has a Pan- American and French fusion menu. It is possible to visit Aspen on a budget, so you don't have to spend a lot.
