Quarterback Baker Mayfield will return to the starting lineup for the Carolina Panthers on Sunday after an exam over the weekend revealed that PJ Walker has a high ankle injury.

Sam Darnold will be the backup for the game against the Baltimore Ravens.

In a Week 5 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the quarterback injured his ankle and missed the rest of the season. He had remained the backup the past four games despite being healthy, despite being replaced by Walker the next week.

In Week 7 of the season, he led three scoring drives, going 14-for-20 passing for 155 yards and two touchdown in a 35-17 loss to Cincinnati.

The 15.3 Total QBR was the lowest in the league this season and the worst since 2006 when the stat was first used. During that time, he had four touchdown passes.

The interim coach said protecting the football was the most important thing that Mayfield had to do.

With a good running game led by D'Onta Foreman, there shouldn't be a lot of pressure on the top pick in the draft. Since trading star back Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers, the Carolinas have rushed for over 150 yards in four of their last five games. They ran the first games at an average of 89.9%.

Since Matt Rhule was fired, running backs have been committed to the running game. "We have to do a great job of establishing the run game, and when we do pass, we have to give him a clean pocket so he can go through his progressions and get the ball down the field.''

According to a league source, the Carolinas had been looking at all of their options at quarterback, including the possibility of releasing Baker Mayfield.

The 25-15 victory over the Falcons on Thursday night was Walker's third win as the starter and kept Carolina in the running for a playoff spot. The injury he suffered in the fourth quarter was not reported because Walker played through it.

Walker won't go on injured reserve, according to Wilks.

He'll be sitting this week and going with Baker.

After spending the first four years of his career with the Cleveland Browns, quarterback Baker Mayfield was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes.
