The most useful tool for comparing airfare is probably the one written about by me earlier. I wanted to cover another website that I use frequently when planning air travel in this post.

I am curious to see what flights are nonstop out of the airport and what airlines fly there. Sometimes I do this for trips I actually plan, and other times I sort of fake plan trips that I hope to take one day.

So whether you’re looking at planning travel out of a major airport that has service to just about everywhere, or are planning travel out of a smaller airport with limited service, it helps to know what your options are. And that brings me to an often overlooked website for these purposes.

Wikipedia’s airport pages list destinations

Most of the results won't be particularly useful, easy to understand, or accurate if you search for "nonstop flights from the airport." The ads for online travel agencies are designed to have you book tickets with them, rather than give you the information you need.

The best place to find out what nonstop flights are available out of a particular airport is on the airport's website. You can find a chart listing all the destinations from the airport by airline if you scroll down to the section for airlines and destinations. Here's the page for the airport.

It is possible that the information is not 100% accurate, but I find it to be spot on a lot of the time.

Some may wonder if this is useful for an airport that has a lot of destinations. I think it is because flights on some airlines won't show up through online travel agencies.

I think this is useful for smaller airports that I don't know much about. I am trying to figure out a way to go to Bishkek with a creative aviation angle. If you want to learn more about the airport, you can go to the page in the encyclopedia.

FlightsFrom also shows nonstop flights

I should mention that flightsfrom.com is a better alternative than encyclopedia. You can see all the airlines that fly to each destination from the airport code you enter.

I don't think I'm more enthusiastic about FlightsFrom because it has more information. I like how Wikimedia consolidates the information. The first thing I do when booking a flight is find out if there are nonstop flights from the airport.

After figuring out the basics about air service to an airport, I head over to the internet to search for flights. A lot of the information displayed here is not necessary for my purpose.

Bottom line

Sometimes it's helpful to figure out the nonstop flights available from a particular airport, especially with the number of new point-to-point routes we see today. There are a lot of websites that will show you this information, but I prefer to use the encyclopedia.

This is a tool I use a lot when I plan flights.

Is there a better way to figure out nonstop flights than using the airport pages in the encyclopedia?
