Just weeks after the Colts named Sam Ehlinger the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, veteran Matt Ryan returned to the starting lineup.
Before their Week 8 game against the Washington Commanders, the Colts moved to Ehlinger because of Ryan's injury. Frank Reich said at the time that the move was meant to be permanent. Jim Irsay was heavily involved in the decision.
Saturday seemed to have a change of heart after Ryan came back to practice this week. After Saturday's news conference, Ehlinger said he would remain the starter.
Saturday began to backtrack.
Saturday was asked how he came to start Ehlinger. I told them that this is not a closed competition. The best 11 will be put on it. Whatever we can do to win games is what we will do. Both have been practicing for a long time. Sam is an energetic young man. A lot of pop comes from him. I was impressed when Matt got out there as well. The man was throwing it around.
When asked about the perception that Irsay was driving the decision, Saturday said it would be up to him.
Ehlinger was the starter for the Colts as they were 0-1. In last week's loss to New England, the Colts had a historically poor offensive performance, going 0-for-14 on third-down attempts and generating less than 120 yards of total offense.
