While Thanksgiving is more than a week away, parts of the western U.S. are getting a lot of cold weather. It's positive news for skiers and snowboarders.

The recent snow has helped the snow base quickly pile up at some popular mountain resorts, bumping up the season- opening dates to the delight of those itching to get in a few early season runs.

Clint Henderson shared some pictures of the winter scene in Montana.

The first major US ski resort opened a few weeks ago, but the recent storms have allowed more resorts to open.

Ski resort operator Ikon Pass has opened 13 resorts ahead of schedule, and will offer skiers and riders bonus days on the slopes. The season started this weekend with a number of lifts.

Some resorts, like Homestake Lodge in Montana, warn visitors that the conditions may not be perfect.

The month of November is a great time to get out on the mountain for skiing and snowboarding.

Here are a few of the early openings that caught our attention. If you have a favorite resort in mind, it's worth checking their website and social media pages to see if recent snowfall has helped to accelerate opening timelines.

Lake Tahoe early-season skiing

The restaurant was expected to open this month. Mother Nature helped change that. The season started this weekend.

Mt. lies north of the lake and across the state line. Rose reported a base depth of 10 to 15 inches of snow and opened on Friday.

Utah ski resorts opening early

Utah has seen some early season powder.

The opening of the resort was moved up to Friday due to the amount of snow that had fallen.

The nearby Snowbird will open two weeks ahead of schedule on November 18. The resort said that Mother Nature delivered.

There are points and miles to be found in Park City.

Aspen Mountain and Snowmass got three feet of snow in the last few days, making them ripe for an opening. Visitors will be able to get in some runs the weekend before Thanksgiving because the lifts will be running ahead of schedule.

The recent storm cycles have dumped more than three feet of snow on our slopes, so we'll officially start loading lifts on Aspen Mountain and Snowmass next Saturday.

There are many places to stay in Aspen.

The 60th anniversary season of Eldora began Friday. Thanks to the recent snow, the opening is a full week ahead of schedule, which is great news for those who are ready to ski.

Lookout Pass, located on the Montana/Idaho border, was able to open its lifts this weekend thanks to this week's snow. The first guests of the season arrived at the resort.

After the snow began to fall in Montana, Great Divide Ski Area teased an opening date. The resort let its guests know it would open this weekend.

Bottom line

The early-season snow has been great news for ski resorts and their customers, allowing for some runs before the leaves fall in other parts of the country.

Expect to see more resorts open their lifts before the weather warms up.
