According to a new poll, more Republicans would prefer to see Ron DeSantis as their presidential nominee in four years than they would like to see Donald Trump.

42% of Republicans and Republican-leaners would prefer the Florida governor to be the nominee, compared to 35% who would prefer the former president, according to a new YouGov America poll.

In a Yahoo News/YouGov poll last month, 45% of respondents said they'd prefer Trump and 34% said they'd prefer DeSantis.

Trump scored higher among "not very strong Republicans" and those that "lean towards" the GOP, but still lost to DeSantis among "strong Republicans."

There were many Trump-endorsed candidates who lost in the election.

Democrats held on to control of the Senate, leading to criticism from within his party.

In the last few days, Trump has lashed out against the governor, calling him an "average governor" and suggesting he lacks loyalty for not ruling out a run for president in the future.

The rise of attacks suggests that Trump is worried about a potential political rival, setting the stage for a potentially divisive run-up to the Republican party's presidential nomination.

It is widely accepted that Trump will make a big announcement on November 15 at Mar-a-Lago.

According to The Independent, his allies expect him to announce his intentions after the state legislative session ends in May.
