There are a lot of differences between Musk's account and others. Most of them are not better according to the general consensus. The app is turning into a deeper pit of chaos and despair than it was before, and the company as well. Things are not good.
The firing of the CEO and most of the executives who had any experience running the company is the first thing that comes to mind. He laid off half the company's employees, including most of the people who were knowledgeable about things like privacy and policy.
Musk wants employees to return to the office for at least 40 hours a week. According to reports, Musk told employees at an all-hands meeting that if they didn't show up, he would accept their resignations.
It isn't that different from what Musk previously ordered at the company. Musk said that if someone is exceptional at their job, then it's possible for them to be effective even telecommuting.
There are jobs that benefit from people coming to the office. Musk doesn't like remote work because he can't see what people are doing, so he has everyone in the office.
He sent an email to employees.
"The road ahead is arduous and will require intense work to succeed. We are also changing Twitter policy such that remote work is no longer allowed, unless you have a specific exception. Managers will send the exceptions lists to me for review and approval. Starting tomorrow (Thursday), everyone is required to be in the office for a minimum of 40 hours per week."
If you lay off half of your employees, you're not giving the kind of motivation you need to overcome those challenges. I don't think you'll get the productivity boost you're looking for if you tell them that the work arrangement is over.
Something to be said for the idea that Musk is going to personally review exceptions to his rule. There are more than 3000 employees at the social networking site. What amount of time does Musk have to review requests to work from home?
Musk told employees that the service could lose billions of dollars this year. The current cash-flow problem at the company is almost entirely due to the fact that Musk took on so much debt to purchase it.
Musk wants to surround himself with people who are similar to him. His work ethic is not very healthy. When the Model 3 was launched, Musk slept on the factory floor. Now that Musk is their boss, some of them have made a point of showing their loyalty by doing the same.
I don't think that is something that should be modeled by anyone who wants to live a normal life. Building a company is hard, and Musk has a lot at stake, but sleeping on the floor of your office trying to fix the mess the world's richest man has made with his newest toy is not a good experience.
Apparently, this is how Musk works. You have the right to work until your fingers bleed. Everyone else is expected to work that way.
None of the people who work at the company forced Musk to give too much money for a company that isn't really worth much. He signed an agreement on his own. They didn't put the company with a huge debt load that could bankrupt it.
Musk said earlier this week that there would be a lot of dumb things happening on the micro-blogging site. I don't know what he has in mind, but this might be the worst.
