The helicopter was one of the first to leave Kathmandu Airport at sunrise. There are many helicopter operators who offer tours to see the mountains in Nepal, but there is only a small window of the season to do this. The best time to go is in April or October when the weather is not so cold.

It took 40 minutes to fly from Kathmandu to Lukla. We can see many mountain peaks far away on the way.

Stop 1. Lukla (9,380 ft / 2,860m)

It is possible to get to Mount Everest. The only way to get there is by car. Trekking, fixed-wing STOL aircraft or helicopter are possible ways to get to Lukla. At 7 am, we arrived there.

Lukla (9,380 ft / 2,860m)
During our stop, we were offered hot tea/coffee as the weather was cold before the sun climbed over the mountain. Captain Vijay Lama and Dr Andreas Hartmann joined me on ths trip.

On the way to Mt Everest, we took off again after a refueled flight.

Namche Bazar (11,290 ft / 3,440m)
Syangboche Airfield (12,402 ft / 3,780m)
We continue to ascend by helicopter, as you can see on GPS it is red everywhere (terrain!)

We were able to see Mt Everest within 10 minutes.

Depending on the angle of view, the mountains can look different and confusing. Some peak may look even taller than Mt Everest from different angles.
Mt Everest (29,031 ft / 8,849m), it is the one with the sharp peak with snow blowing at the top.

Mt Everest was tall from where our helicopter was. The limit of our helicopter is Camp 2 of Mt Everest. We couldn't get higher than Camp 1 because of the wind gusts.

The view of the icefall was amazing. You can watch my video. It's too cold to climb Everest in the fall, so there aren't any camps set up there. The camp is going to be changed for the spring.

Stop 2. Kala Patthar (18,519 ft / 5,644m)

We eventually landed at Kala Patthar (18,519 ft / 5,644m).

I was taking pictures so quickly that I became confused. The helicopter has an oxygen supply.

The helicopter kept its engine running while we were outside. I've never set foot at a higher altitude.

The Gokyo Lake is a beautiful lake. We flew over Cho La Pass, the world's highest mountain, after seeing the world's highest glacier.

I was told by the helicopter pilot that the rule is to keep left. He flew on the right towards the lake. I can't believe how close we are to those mountains. You can watch the action on my video.

Stop 3. Gokyo Ri (17,575 ft / 5,357m)

We headed to the world's highest hotel for breakfast after a brief stop on the lake.

We left after breakfast to return to Lukla. There is a good light on the runway. Helicopters bring cargo and trekkers down from the mountain on a regular basis. The donkeys are used to move the cargo around the villages.

I will never forget the trip, it was a once in a lifetime experience.

Our Trip

We returned to Kathmandu after 40 minutes in Lukla. From the scenery, there is nothing like it.

It is not difficult to do this trip as compared to trekking. We stayed at 20,000 ft for a few minutes, despite the helicopter providing oxygen.

The trip took a long time. It costs about $1200 per person to share a helicopter.
