Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto wins reelection over Republican Adam Laxalt, NBC News projects

A swing-state seat for the Democrats was defended by Sen. Catherine Masto, D-Nevada, who defeated former state Attorney General Adam Laxalt.

Nevada was one of the best places for the GOP to pick up a seat in the Senate. One of the last unresolved U.S. Senate races was in Nevada.

Masto is the first Latina to serve in the US Senate. The former state attorney general became the new senator after the death of the old one.

Comprehensive immigration reform and abortion rights were two of the issues the Nevada Democrat was campaigning on. If Laxalt was elected, Senate Republicans would push for a total abortion ban.

The Inflation Reduction Act is one of the most popular policies of the Biden administration.

From 2007 to 2015, Masto was Nevada's attorney general.
