Democrats will hold their razor-thin majority in the U.S. Senate, NBC News predicts, staving off a full-bore effort by Republicans to leverage economic volatility and public discontent into control of the upper chamber of congress.
In the next Congress, the party will hold at least 50 seats in the Senate. There is a race in Georgia where a Democratic senator is trying to hold onto his seat against a republican. The Senate is split evenly between the Democrats and the Republicans.
The battle for the Senate was seen as a toss-up by analysts going into Election Day. The chamber for Democrats was0-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-1620-162!
Schumer said the election results were a victory for Democrats.
Republicans had expected a "red wave" to wash Democrats out of their majority in the legislature. The legislative agenda of President Joe Biden and his ability to advance key nominations for his next two years in office would have been in danger.
But that wave didn't come true. Many analysts predicted that Biden's unpopularity, along with historical electoral trends and persistently high inflation, would cause the party in power to lose.
Senate Democrats will retain their majority if Walker is defeated. If Republicans take control of the House, it will give the party another reason to dislike them.
House control has not yet been projected by NBC News.
Once all uncalled races are settled, NBC believes Republicans could win more than 200 House seats. There is a margin of error of four seats.
