The record for the highest price paid for a baseball glove was shattered at the 19th annual Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory auction.
It is thought that the previous record was $387,500 for a Lou Gehrig glove. A glove believed to have been used in the 1955 and 1956 World Series sold for $373,000.
Ruth used the Ruth glove from 1927- 1933. An audio recording from 1964, used in "The Glory of Their Times," shows Austin pounding the leather with his hand.
The niece of Jimmy Austin said that her childhood memories with her uncle are very important to her. The glove had been in a box for 30 years, until we heard the audio recording.
Hunt Auctions said that the glove was originally thought to be a vintage Babe Ruth store model. The provenance and authenticity process yielded more than a photo match to a Ruth image. The monumental glove is one of the most historic pieces of its medium to have ever been offered at public auction, according to David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions.
