  • According to Musk, he's usually responsive on email and responds within hours.

  • Two weeks after buying the company, the tech mogul waited to host a company-wide Q&A.

  • Staff have been told to return to the office or be fired.

Musk addressed the company's staff in a Q&A on Thursday, two weeks after he took ownership of the company. After sending his first ever company-wide email to his employees, he told them to come back to work for at least 40 hours a week.

Musk told staff during the Q&A that he is usually pretty responsive on email. In the 14 days since his takeover, he has not communicated.

Musk said that he's responsive on email. If I didn't reply within a day, email me again. It usually takes me less than a day to respond. It usually happens within hours.

Before the email was sent, the company had only sent generic emails with Musk's name attached. Workers spoke to WIRED about the "radio silence" they had received from Musk and his advisers.

Musk told staff at Thursday's Q&A that they could lose their jobs if they didn't return to the office without a valid exemption. People are more productive when they are in person because of the better communication.

Musk hasn't communicated directly with most staff other than senior employees, but he has made many announcements about planned changes. He said on Wednesday that there would be a lot of dumb things happening on the social networking site.

Some new features have been requested by Musk and workers have been pushed to make them. In just two weeks, Musk has told engineers to get to work on a Vine reboot, announced a $6.99 monthly fee for users who want blue check marks after their names, and suspended some accounts after they impersonated him as a joke. Some of the company's top executives have been fired and large numbers of staff have been laid off.

Musk said at the Q&A that he was a big believer in having a "maniacal sense of urgency." Just go and do it!" It's a hardcore sport.

Musk told staff that "bankruptcy isn't out of the question."
