Marcotti: Chelsea poorly constructed over the summer (1:58)

Some serious mistakes were made during the summer transfer window, and now they are paying the price. There is a time and a place for it.

3:01 PM ET

It was a deserved win for the home side as they beat the Blues at St James' Park in the early part of the season. Players and coaches from both sides pushed and shoved on the edge of the penalty area after Joe Willock scored the only goal of the game.

The table of upcoming fixtures is reported in the report.

Eddie Howe's side did an impromptu lap of honour after the final whistle and will return to the top flight in third. The World Cup break comes at a bad time for the Blues, who have lost their last four games in all competition.

Player ratings, best and worst performers, highlights and notable moments, post- match quotes, and key statistics are included.

Rapid reaction

1. World Cup break comes at the wrong time for Newcastle, right time for Chelsea

Eddie Howe and Graham Potter will have different feelings when they look at the table. They will be in the top four at Christmas for the first time in over a decade, thanks to their third place finish and two point lead over Manchester City.

For the third time in the last 21 years, the Blues will be outside the top four at Christmas after they lost their third consecutive game in the league. Howe would be forgiven for thinking that the World Cup has come at the wrong time. When domestic football returns after the World Cup, he can only hope that his team has built up enough steam to keep it going.

Potter appears to be in need of a break in the other dug-out. After a good start to his new job, after being parachuted into the job mid-season, the former Seagulls boss has had little time to relax, as his team has only won two of their last eight.

2. Newcastle aiming for the Champions League

At the beginning of the season, there was a debate about whether or not the club could break into the top six. During the World Cup break, there should be a debate about whether they can crack the top four and make the playoffs. On paper it looks like a narrow win, but it was much more than that. Willock's fine goal came midway through the second half after the home side had been on top for most of the game.

In the new year, many of the top teams will play in Europe, but only one game a week until the end of the season will be played byNewcastle. Howe will have more time to prepare his squad and his players will have more time to rest.

Nick Pope made a great save and the rest of the defense did a good job. Without Alexander Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin, this is still a very good side and the rest of the top six have been warned.

3. Trippier and Pulisic deliver preview of England vs. USA

The Group B clash between England and the U.S. will take place in November, but the second half at St James' Park was a preview of that match. England's starting right-back at the World Cup, Tripper, was almost immediately clattered by Pulisic, who came on at half-time at the expense of Cesar Azpilicueta. It was the right-back who won the dual after Trippier was booked.

After picking up the ball on the left, he darted into the penalty area but was narrowly missed by the Englishman. There was one run and cross that drew applause from Potter, but other than that Trippier was in complete control of the game. The next time Pulisic and Trippier see each other, they could be playing in the World Cup.
