A court in Pakistan sentenced the ex-husband of the American woman to death for killing her in a property dispute.

A lawyer said that the district court in Rawalpindi sentenced the father and employee of the murdered woman to seven years in prison. Three other suspects were acquitted.

The results of the yearlong trial were announced by the judge. The man was sentenced to death for killing his former wife. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he was found guilty of kidnapping.

Swati traveled to Pakistan to take possession of the former couple's house. The lawyer said that after killing Swati in the disputed home, Habib and his associates took the body to the home of another person and buried it there.

His mother was the owner of the house.

Two family members were sentenced to seven years in prison for their roles in kidnapping and murder. The three employees of Habib who were acquitted were not guilty.

The defense attorney said he would appeal the conviction and sentence.

Swati, the mother of three sons, arrived in Pakistan in October of 2021. She bought a house in New York after she and her husband were divorced.

Swati's son filed a complaint with the police after he couldn't get in touch with his mother. Police were contacted by the U.S. Embassy for help in locating Swati. The last person to see her was the man who was questioned by police.

He confessed to abducting and killing Swati at the airport. He said he buried Swati's body at his home. The police exhumed Swati's body in December.

The attorney said that the evil man planned the game after he got closer to Wajiha Swati.

Violence against women and girls in Pakistan is a serious problem according to Human Rights Watch. Women's inheritance rights are usually taken away by male relatives.
