Amy ConeyBarrett cracked a joke about her life since helping to decimate abortion access across the United States while taking the podium in a room full of cheering conservatives.

She said it was nice to not have protesters outside of her house.

The Supreme Court justice spoke at Washington's Union Station on Thursday, which was the last day of the national lawyers convention.

Her joke elicited laughter and a standing applause from the crowd.

After the conservative justices voted to overturn the Wade decision, protesters showed up at her home.

As a result of the decision, reproductive health care access was set back in many areas.

Activists staged a "Handmaid's Tale" themed demonstration in the neighborhood after a draft of the Dobbs decision was leaked. There was a group of protesters dressed in long robes and bonnets. According to an investigation by The Washington Post, at least one person held a sign that said, "We did notelect People of Praise", a reference to the small, ultraconservative Christian group in which Barrett served as a "handmaid."

The protesters carried signs with messages such as "reproductive rights are human rights" and "liar" after the decision was handed down.

Many attribute the turnout to public anger over the Supreme Court's abortion decision to the fact that voters favored Democrats more widely than expected.
