There is nothing you can do to prepare you for the first time. Our tiny car climbed up and over the slate colored, dusty mountain road, zigzagging back and forth up the switchbacks, climbing higher and higher away from the sea on our way north up the Baja Peninsula from La Paz. At one point, the peaks parted and we were able to go down to the Sea of Cortes. It was an interesting start.

The Villa del Palmar is located on the western shore of the Sea of Cortes and is within the gated community.

It seems that the optional all-inclusive property is the most popular resort in Mexico. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix and Dallas are some of the places where its devotees come from.

You wouldn't know the resort was there if you weren't in front of it. Villa del Palmar is nestled within the mountains and offers a remote feel.

There are secluded coves, pristine beaches, five pools, and an 18-hole golf course at the resort.

The all-suite resort underwent an update with the addition of a new hotel wing and 158 accommodations. New penthouses and oceanfront suites overlook the bay and are located on the ocean side. Guests can opt out of the all-inclusive plan and cook their own food in the kitchen.

Danzante is a fine dining restaurant with a romantic atmosphere and an extensive wine list. It is an extra fee per visit for those on the all-inclusive plan but it is worth it.

The highlight of our Baja adventure was discovering Villa del Palmar. The hidden gem on the Cortes coast has a loyal following. It won't be long before its secret is out because of its dramatic scenery, wonderful service, and top-notch food.
