The Associated Press confirmed Friday night that Mark Kelly had won the crucial Arizona Senate race, meaning Democrats are just one win away from controlling the upper chamber.
The Associated Press called the race Friday night, with Kelly ahead 51.8% to 46.1%, leaving only the Georgia and Alaska races to be called.
Kelly, who is married to a former Arizona congresswoman, thanked the state.
Kelly won the seat in a special election in 2020 after the death of John McCain, and he cast himself as a moderate who is willing to work across the aisle.
Masters, a first-time candidate and venture capitalist who helped spread conspiracies that the 2020 presidential election was rigged in President Joe Biden's favor, won the Republican primary by a comfortable 12-point margin.
According to FiveThirtyEight, Kelly had a slim 1.5 point lead over Masters.
Masters gained more than 6 points in the final month of the campaign as a result of the support of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. As of Monday, the incumbent had more than $81 million in cash on hand, while Masters had more than $12 million. Kelly was linked to President Joe Biden by ads in support of Masters that claimed the incumbent supported progressive criminal justice policies and immigration initiatives that caused chaos at the border. Masters was hammered by Kelly over his support for abortion.
There are three more Senate races that have not yet been decided. In Nevada, Republican Adam Laxalt has a narrow lead over Democrat Catherine Masto, with just 850 votes separating the two candidates. In Alaska, the far-right candidate Kelly Tshibaka is in a close race with the incumbent.
The Arizona Senate race is currently a toss-up.
Billions of dollars are spent in the key Senate races by Trump-linked super PACs.
