Joe Lombardo, a police officer and sheriff in Las Vegas who was endorsed by Donald Trump, has been elected governor of Nevada.
Steve Sisolak became a one-term Democrat after losing the governorship of the Silver State to Lombardo.
Sisolak said in a statement that the race was too close to call and that they would fall a percentage point or so short of victory. I contacted the sheriff to wish him well.
A broad mail voting law passed by the state Legislature in 2020 delayed the count of ballots in Nevada. If the ballots are postmarked by Election Day, they must be accepted by the counties.
The nonpartisan elected head of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Lombardo began his career as a police officer in Las Vegas in 1988 and served two terms as Clark County sheriff.
He blamed funding limits and mandates from a Democratic-controlled Legislature for the increase in crime.
During the campaign, Lombardo distanced himself from Trump, but never endorsed false claims that the election was rigged. During his only debate with Sisolak, Lombardo said that there wasn't enough to change the result of the election.
Lombardo, who emerged for the general election from a crowded GOP primary field, derided a state public health insurance option that the Legislature passed and Sisolak signed.
Nevada voters approved a law in 1990 that allowed abortions up to 24 weeks into a pregnant woman's life. He said there was nothing the governor could do.
