The England's T20 World Cup campaign was hanging by a thread.

Things were looking bleak when Australia had Ireland 25-5 chasing 180 and Ireland had lost to Australia.

A huge win for the hosts would have put them in the box seat for qualification but instead England's unlikely hero was Ireland batter Lorcan Tucker who scored 71 not out to ensure Australia's margin of victory was comfortable rather than crushing.

Chriswoakes fist pumped in his hotel room as Tucker hit boundary after boundary. The England players were in the hotel bar.

One of the key moments in England's recovery was the Tucker hit.

The tour that brought a team together

The start of England's revival started earlier.

England were whitewashed by India and South Africa in the Twenty20 series last summer and looked a shadow of the side which had dominated white-ball cricket over the previous four years.

In September, England traveled to Pakistan for a series of T20s. It looked like a long tour would have little effect on the World Cup challenge in Australia.

The white-ball side had taken a back seat in recent months, but it proved to be no different.

"Because we were locked up in a hotel and couldn't go out there was a lot more bonding," said Moeen Ali, who captained England in the 4-3 series victory.

It was very similar to when Morgs took over.

It was a new start and people were buying into the way we were talking.

Buttler grows as a leader

It was going to be hard for Buttler to follow in Morgan's footsteps. England's former captain became a powerful figure at the top of the English game after leading them to the 50-over World Cup title in 2019.

Morgan has rooms that hang on his every word while Buttler has rooms that are quieter. Throughout the World Cup, Buttler spoke frequently with the media.

He doesn't usually give the headline.

Buttler has become a leader on the field. The win over New Zealand in the group stage was a perfect example of the tactics of a white-ball captain.

Buttler was adamant that he wanted to chase after India in the semi- final. Buttler's call was vindicated in a big way.

A number of players have spoken about Buttler's increased influence.

It could have been seen that we're still trying to live in the Eoin Morgan era but that's not the case.

Moeen has become England's right-hand man on the field to discuss tactics or offer support to the bowler.

"They have acknowledged all of the great work that has been done in this white-ball team in the past under Morgan and the previous regime but want to build on that and keep looking forward."

Morgan has been in Australia for the tournament. He is a god parent to one of Buttler's children.

Rather than relying on his former captain, Buttler has kept his distance.

Recalls pay off

In the lead up to the tournament, Buttler made a number of big decisions.

Alex Hales was dropped and then left in the international wilderness after Buttler decided to recall him.

Hales was England's leading run-scorer in the semi-finals, hitting 86 not out.

Ben had not played in the T20 side for 18 months.

Before England's opening match in Perth, Buttler sat Stokes down and had a discussion about what he wanted from him.

It made me realize how I can affect the game.

The highlight of his batting return has been his 42 not out to see England over the line against Srillanka.

He is the most economical of England's seamers.

The talismanic all-rounder spoke in the dressing room after the loss to Ireland.

A relaxed camp

Buttler told his teammates after the loss that it should hurt.

This year in the one-day team and the Test side, England have run a relaxed camp with optional training sessions.

Many players have spent days on the golf course while others have spent time with their families at the beach or at an aquarium.

There was no overreaction to the Ireland game.

We were frustrated and disappointed but there was no finger pointing.

England have won three knockouts in a row. They will be world champion if they win another one.
