The actor who voiced Batman in the Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League cartoons as well as a plethora of video games has died. The man was 66.
Diane Pershing, who played Poison Ivy in Batman: The Animated Series, was the first to report on the passing of the character.
"Kevin was far more than an actor whom I had the pleasure of casting and directing, he was a dear friend for over 30 years, whose kindness and generous spirit knew no boundaries." Kevin will be with me for the rest of my life.
The Star Wars star said that Kevin was perfect. I loved him like a brother and he was one of my favorites. His decency shone through everything he did. My spirits were raised every time I met him.
The Batman: The Animated Series writer Paul Dini was one of the first to pay tribute to the actor.
His career as an actor began with a role on the soap opera Another World before moving onto the stage. The rise of the AIDs epidemic was a subject that was written about in this year's DCComics Pride issue. When he was cast in the role of Bruce Wayne and Batman in the 1992 Batman: The Animated Series, he was catapulted to fame and fortune.
As a result of his portrayal of the playboy Wayne persona and the tortured Batman in the movies, he became the Batman of generation after generation as he continued to voice the character in continuations. In the decades since The Animated Series, the voice of the Dark Knight has remained the same, thanks to his vocal presence and reach, as well as several films and video games. The CW DC TV show Crisis on Infinite Earths had a live-action version of Bruce Wayne playing.
There is a mask of confidence to the world and a private one with wounds. They asked if I could relate to Batman's identity as an out gay man. I don't know if I'm public or private face. I wondered if I made too many compromises. I felt my face flush, my breath grew deeper, and a voice came out that I didn't know was there. The sound shook my body. The voice that became the Batman was defined by that rumbling sound, and will continue to be even after his death.
