Remembering Gallagher Getty

The comedian known for smashing watermelons as part of his legendary act has passed away.

There was a death in the Palm Springs area on Friday. He died of massive organ failure, according to hismanager. He had suffered a lot of heart attacks over the years.

Gallagher was on the road for a long time. He was pretty sure that he had a record for the most stand-up dates by attrition alone.

He became one of the most popular and recognizable comedians in America after appearing on the "Tonight Show" in 1975.

His trademark bit was the "Sledge-O-Matic," where he'd destroy a bunch of things with a mallet. It was a parody of the Veg-O-Matic commercials and went on to be remembered by millions.

Since his act became a pop culture phenomenon, he has been parodied and referenced over the years.

His first special, "An Uncensored Evening," was his 17th and final one. He appeared in several shows, including "Hollywood Squares" and "Tosh.0".

He had a health scare in 2011. He had a heart attack moments before he was scheduled to perform.

We haven't seen the comedian in a while, but he gave us some great advice on how to get a gift for someone on a budget.

He is survived by his daughters and sons.

The man was 76.

I am sad.
