James Maddison was too good to be ignored for the England World Cup squad, according to Jamie Redknapp.
There was a surprise inclusion in the group of 26 players announced on Thursday by the England manager.
Even though there were question marks over their fitness, Kyle Walker and KalvinPhillips were included.
Ahead of England's opening game against Iran on November 21st, Redknapp spoke on Sky Sports News about why he was not surprised thatPhillips was included in the squad.

I had a text exchange with James on Thursday, and he said he was so happy. I have both sides to it, the jubilation of getting into a squad and the disappointment of being injured and missing out on a squad, and I feel terrible for him.
At the weekend, I said that he was too good to be ignored. If he hadn't been picked, it would have been terrible. The form he's been in with goals and assists in a side that has struggled, but it's not just the last few months that has got him in.
There was something between him and the manager. The fact that Gareth is large enough to say "that's gone now, we'll get on with it". stranger things have happened if he is playing well enough and training well enough to get into the team.
It's going to be difficult to be in the starting XI because we have so many good players. I came on against Scotland and forced my way into Terry Venables' thoughts, even though I wasn't in the starting line up. If you're not a starter, you can't do anything.
"It's a big squad and the only way you can do it is to train well, show a great attitude and who knows, there may be a couple of injuries in your position." It will feel like a World Cup if you get a start or come on to make an impact.
Normally, you have a four or five-week period to get yourself into a game- ready position, but the guys are straight out of the premier league and playing very quickly. Everyone in the squad needs to be ready and waiting for their chance, who knows how it will affect certain players.

There are players that are similar to Maddison. I think if you asked Phil if he wanted to play in the No 10 role, he would prefer it.
The players that can receive it on the half turn are Mason Mount and Maddison, who can drive with the ball and do something different. Over the last few years we've been safe because they take risks with their passing. There are players in the squad that are going to take risks with the ball, and I like that.
They aren't afraid to lose it or give it to someone else. If we're going to be successful, Harry Kane needs that. It's a squad that's been picked on form, and we've got a guy in wide areas that's in great shape.
When he first took over, gareth said that he would do that again. I want an England team that isn't boring. I would like to see a team that is willing to take risks and try to win the tournament.
It won't take him long to start. He will find his feet quickly after playing in the cup.
There will be a lot of discussion between the two of them. He had a fantastic Euros, I remember being at the Croatia game when he was the best player on the pitch, and he was the man of the match.
Whoever is in front of Bellingham and Rice will be in the middle of the field. When there's 10 or 15 minutes to go, you want someone to come on in the middle to shore it up and make sure you're a bit more defensively minded, and that's whatPhillips is.
I'm not surprised he picked him because he's a great passer of the ball.

"If you are James Ward-Prowse, you might be a bit disappointed because you've played every single minute for your team and you see someone who has just come in from nowhere and is going to get picked ahead of you."
I can see how it might be difficult for other players to accept it. I'm a fan of him and I can understand why he picked him.
He will be fresh and ready to play, that's where you have to sometimes take chances. You are going to pick up injuries in this squad, but you're also going to have a situation where you're going to have a little bit of time to train him, time to watch games and he might be a little bit of a wild card.

It would have been one of the most difficult calls because TammyAbraham has been out of form, but he's perhaps not had that run that you need."
Wilson and Ivan Toney are both good players and I think it will be a straight shootout. Toney is a great penalty taker, a good scorer, good in the box and has improved beyond all recognition.
If we were to have an injury to Kane, Wilson would be the one you would look at to come on.
Sky Sports' Jamie Redknapp: "I look at that squad and a player that has hardly had a mention who I know has done a brilliant job for Jose Mourinho as well is Chris Smalling.
"He's probably been as good as any defender we've seen this season, but because of perhaps previously not being in good form for Man Utd or England, but he's unlucky and Tomori's unlucky."
"That was a tough call and I'm sure the players he couldn't pick will be really disappointed, but that's why you have to make decisions."
There's another round of games to go and stranger things have happened with people picking up injuries, so players like Ward-Prowse and Toney need to hang in there.

"Especially for James because he missed out on the Euros and he's been in great shape." There isn't much you can do about it. They're at an age where they can hopefully play in the Euros with their form, so you have to take it on the chin and hope for the best.
You have to watch the World Cup and not be there, but there's not much you can do. The people around you are going to be influential in helping you do that.
