Amazon is building a better drone that will help chart a course for the company's Prime Air delivery service after the project was hampered by multiple malfunction, crashes, and even fires. The new drones will be quieter, go further, and handle the elements better than the old ones.

The new drones have the same function and goal as their predecessors: fly vertically hundreds of feet into the air, autonomously maneuver and land, and deliver up to five pounds.

The company announced in July that it was partnering with the city of College Station and Texas A&M University to do test flights with its Prime Air drones.

The company faces many hurdles, including approval from the FAA, and is still far away from its goal of operating a 30-minute delivery service on your roof.

At a time when Amazon's devices unit is facing billions of dollars in operating losses, the company is looking to find areas to cut costs. We don't know if Prime Air can get more hang time because the company is evaluating how to maximize costs.
