According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 16 people have been affected by the outbreak. One person died and 13 others were hospitalized due to the disease.

Four of the 16 cases that took place this year were reported by the CDC. Seven cases were identified in New York state, two in Illinois and Massachusetts, one in New Jersey and California, and one in Maryland, where there was a death. Public health officials found that one person caught the disease and lost their baby.

According to the CDC statement, the true number of people who are sick is likely higher than the reported number. According to early data, the likely source of the outbreak is meats and cheeses from deli counters, but investigators are still trying to identify any products that may be contaminated with the outbreak strain.

The Food and Drug Administration says that listeria can be found in soil, water, moist environments and decaying vegetables. Food products that have been contaminated can be used to transmit the disease. Food can be preserved using a variety of methods.

There are many devastating infectious diseases.

Health officials flagged an ice cream brand as the cause of a different outbreak. Unpasteurized milk, smoked fish, hot dogs, and raw vegetables have been linked to previous outbreak.

Interviews are being conducted to find out what people ate in the month before getting sick. According to the CDC, symptoms of listeriosis can start as early as the same day or as late as 70 days after eating a contaminated meal.

11 people said they ate meat or cheese from the deli counter. Five people who were sick in New York bought sliced deli meat or cheese from NetCost Market. The same strain of L. monocytogenes was found in environmental samples at a NetCost Market deli. NetCost Market closed the Brooklyn deli and deep cleaned it to make sure it was free of the disease.

According to the recent CDC announcement, some sick people in the outbreak did not shop at NetCost Market. The outbreak strain of the pathogen was likely introduced into delis in multiple states.

Unless it is reheated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius), meat and cheese should not be eaten from any deli counter.

People with weakened immune systems and people who are pregnant are at the highest risk of severe infections according to the CDC. Older adults and people with compromised immune systems can get infections in the brain and bloodstream. Newborns with listeriosis can develop serious problems that need immediate treatment and can lead to lifelong health issues or death. Premature delivery can be caused by infections.
