Why Man United cannot afford to play without Fernandes (1:06)

The importance of Bruno Fernandes was shown by Man United's loss to the Villars. There is a time and a place for this.

Manchester United booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 4-2 victory over Villa. After being beaten by Villa in the premier league on Sunday, United came back twice to beat Unai Emery's side.

The visitors led twice through Ollie Watkins and a Diogo Dalot own goal, but were pegged back by two goals from Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, who celebrated his England World Cup call-up with his eighth goal of the season.

Bruno Fernandes put United in front 12 minutes from time before Scott McTominay added a fourth in the last minute of the game to give United a four goal cushion.

Player ratings, best and worst performers, highlights and notable moments, and key statistics are included.

Rapid reaction

1. Ten Hag puts trophy hopes before the World Cup

"My priority this season is to get United into the top four and back in the playoffs," said ten Hag. Even with the World Cup just days away, there were no days off for his key players.

He was rewarded with a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after making seven changes from the team which lost at Villa Park on Sunday. Even English football's second domestic trophy is worth his time, even though United haven't won anything in over a year.

As long as he has a chance to win some silverware, Ten Hag won't care if he plays again after the World Cup final. This is a trophy he wants to win and he celebrated at the end.

2. United need Martial to stay fit

Martial was one of the best players on the preseason tour of Thailand and Australia, but his season has been disrupted by three separate injuries. He scored his fourth goal in just his sixth appearance of the season after starting against Villa and being back to full fitness. Staying fit has been the problem for the Frenchman this season, not goals.

Martial could have a big part to play in the second half of the season. After the Christmas season, he will be well rested and Ten Hag hopes that he will help the United solve their goal scoring problem.

During the summer, United looked a better team with him leading the line. He was taken off early here as a precautionary measure, but he will be crucial when the season starts again after the World Cup. Ten Hag hopes that he doesn't get injured.

3. Emery learns a lot as Villa push United close

Emery will have learned a lot from Villa being out of the cup. Having defeated United so comprehensively, Villa's new manager could have stuck with the same team, but instead he decided to shuffle his squad and take a look at his fringe players.

Only four of the seven changes from the team that won at Villa Park were retained. The only chance to see the likes of John McGinn and Danny Ings before the second half of the United game was due to the fact that Villa don't play again until after Christmas.

Villa haven't won a major trophy since 1996 and while fans will be disappointed that one realistic chance of silverware this season has gone, Emery will likely feel that the risk of rotating his team was worth it.
