Verlander: I wouldn't change a thing about this season (1:12)

The World Series win was the perfect end to Verlander's first season after surgery. There is a time and a place for this.

The Major League Baseball Players Association announced that Mychal Givens, Tommy Pham, and Jordan Lyles are free agents.

The Astros were going to pay Verlander $25 million in 2023, but he opted out of his contract. The 39-year-old righty had one of the best seasons of his career in 2022, posting a 1.75ERA and a 0.83 WHIP, striking out 185 batters in 175innings over 28 starts for the World Champion Astros. The winner of the Cy Young Award will be announced next week.

Verlander is one of the top free-agent pitchers.

The Mets declined their end of a mutual option, which led to Givens hitting the market. Givens will be able to sign with a free-agency. The Cubs signed Givens to a one-year, $5 million contract in the off-season after he was traded to the Yankees. In the first half of the season, Givens had a 2.26 earned run average for the Cubs, but struggled in Queens, posting a 4.79 earned run average for the Mets.

The Red Sox declined their end of a $12 million mutual option for the outfielder, giving him a $1.5 million buyout and sending him to free agency. Boston acquired the outfielder from Cincinnati at the trade deadline. In 622 plate appearances, he hit.235/.302/.373.

After the Orioles declined the righty's $11 million club option for 2023, he became a free-agent. The Baltimore Orioles signed right-handed pitcher Jordan Lyles to a seven-year, $7 million contract in 2022.
