Emergency SOS via satellite for the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro will be available later this month.
The service will be free for the first two years, but it will rely on the phone's antenna to connect to satellite frequencies. It can take less than 15 seconds for a message to be sent with a clear view of the sky, according to Apple. You can use the Find My app to let people know where you are.
Apple and Globalstar have a $450 million fund towards satellite infrastructure. This funding is part of a larger Advanced Manufacturing Fund at Apple that the company has used for a lot of things.
Apple says that more than 300 Globalstar employees will support the service. The message is received by one of Globalstar's 24 satellites, which travel at speeds of 16,000 mph.
The new Emergency SOS via satellite feature will be released later this month, but Apple hasn't said when it will be available. There are currently two versions of Apple's mobile operating system: iOS 16.2 andiOS 16.1. You might be able to get a feel for the new feature before you have to use it for real, because the code in the new version of the app shows a demo mode.
