There is a change in China that wasn't pushed through in other parts of the world.
AirDrop is now active 10 minutes after a user manually turns it on. If the user turns AirDrop on for everyone, it will stay active indefinitely.
Users can receive files from other users or swap them for their own Apple devices with AirDrop. Protesters in China used the feature to send media messages that opposed the country's authoritarian rule.
It's difficult to use AirDrop in China as the user has to turn it on every 10 minutes.
Apple didn't say why the change was implemented only in China, but it did say that it will be rolled out globally in the coming year.
In the past, Apple has introduced or withdrawn features in the Chinese market. Private Relay, a feature that protects user privacy by keeping their web surfing data private, was not launched in many countries. In order to hide internet traffic data from providers, an app was removed from the App Store.
AirDrop being open to everyone all the time isn't a good idea if you don't really use it. There have been cases of hackers abusing the feature to get access to private data, and the feature is sometimes used for cyber flashing, which is sending people unwanted images or videos.
