The men's T20 World Cup final will be played at the Adelaide Oval.
The opening pair of Buttler and Hales overcame a feverish India-supportive atmosphere to chase 169.
They romped home with a massive 24 balls to spare to set up a final against Pakistan.
Hales and Buttler scored their 10th six of the match when Buttler was out for 80.
Before Hardik Pandya's 63 from 33 balls powered his side to what had looked a testing score, England's bowling had restricted India well.
Buttler took on the onslaught after Hales gave England a rapid start.
The 1992 50-over World Cup final at theMCG was a repeat of what would have been a mouth-watering India- Pakistan finale.
It was supposed to be the night that India joined their rivals in the sporting finals.
A frenzied crowd was expecting a lot but by the end a small group of England fans were happy.
England's bowling effort, without Mark Wood because of injury and up against India's batting line-up of superstars, was tidy and disciplined until Hardik's late burst.
The batting was really good.
Buttler took three fours from the first over, before Hales and Buttler took both pace and spin.
Buttler roared with joy as the final strike cleared the field.
After a defeat by Ireland two weeks ago, the campaign was in a state of disrepair.
Pakistan produced a remarkable recovery to reach the showpiece, but were beaten by England in a T20 series in their own backyard.
England was able to restrict India in the early stages because of Wood's absence.
Chris Woakes got one to rise off a length and take KL Rahul's edge in the second over and when dangerman Suryakumar Yadav was taken to deep point, it was the last time India would see him.
The former captain was unable to find top gear and was especially effective through the middle with a four-over spell that cost only 20.
The man fell at the end of the 18th after being caught by the diving Rashid.
Hardik hit back-to-back sixes off Jordan in the 18th, one of which was a short ball that hit his pads, and the next a full ball that flew off his pads, as he helped take 22 from the last over.
It would not have been enough if Hardik had added another 30 runs.
There is more to come.
