There are some great images from the lunar eclipse. This may be the one that tops them all.

The moon is shown in various stages of the eclipse in this amazing image.

McCarthy said that the size and shape of the shadow is visible. These events are amazing to watch.

McCarthy took pictures of the entire eclipse from his backyard. You can see how the moon moved through the Earth's shadow if you look closely.

The detail in the images of the moon is striking. McCarthy did it.

My finished shot from this morning's total lunar eclipse. This image was captured by using two telescopes, one to capture intricate detail on the lunar surface, and one to capture the rich tones cast by Earth's shadow across the disc. Go ahead, zoom in on it! pic.twitter.com/XpXcqihiId

"Overall, I shot around 150,000 images," McCarthy told Universe Today. "My strategy was to first take photos using my c11 at the native 2800mm with the asi174mm's fast but tiny sensor. I imaged the Moon in small segments capturing thousands of frames per segment, which were then sorted, stacked and sharpened, so when the panorama of the Moon was stitched together it had incredible detail."

McCarthy claimed to have done this three times. He mounted his Sony a7ii camera to his telescope at 2000mm and used it to take 500 photos of the entire moon.

These images were combined with a previously captured high-resolution photo of the Moon to provide incredible detail to create the final component.

McCarthy refers to the photo as "Shadows and Sunsets" because during a total lunar eclipse, the Moon shines in the colors from all the sunrises and sunsets on Earth.

Earth's atmosphere absorbs the other colors while it bends the sun's rays towards the Moon. Sunsets here on Earth are often orange and red due to the sun bending through the atmosphere.

McCarthy has limited quantities of prints on his website.

The full-size image is nearly 190MIPs, so it is incredibly detailed and can be printed up really large. McCarthy said something on the social networking site.

McCarthy uses high-resolution versions of his photographs. He said he needs gear to improve his images.

"However as I got deeper into this hobby it became apparent this is my calling, so I am leaning on my patrons to help support me as I begin doing this full-time," he said on his website.

McCarthy said that he bought his first telescope in order to connect people with the universe and inspire a new generation of astronomy explorers.

He wanted to have a better view of the night sky.

McCarthy moved to Arizona because he wanted to make sure he could shoot events like this without interruption.

I built a simple observatory in my backyard which has two permanent piers inside it, allowing me to safely run equipment the entire night and easily close up at dawn. I was prepared to travel across the country if the weather was not good.

McCarthy answered his most frequently asked questions and suggested what gear is needed to do the type of photography he does in a thread on the social networking site.
