At the Country Awards on Tuesday night, the creative forces behind some of country music's recent big hits were honored.
The biggest award of the night would be the BMI Icon Award, which would be won by Toby. It is an honor to be a part of a prestigious group of legacy artists.
Over the course of more than three decades, he has had 32 No. 1 hit songs, including favorites like "I Love This Bar," "Wish I Didn't Know Now," and "Beer for My Horses." He didn't have a co- writer for 11 of the songs.
Many of the people at the dinner noted how much he had influenced them in their own careers.
Michael Ray said that the first song he ever learned and recorded was "Should've Been a Cowboy" by the country singer.
I met him in Houston after I grew up a big fan. We were playing an acoustic song in his tent while I was playing the Houston Rodeo. I thought Toby left after he surprised us. We have to play the song "Should've Been a Cowboy." Toby sang the song with us after we started the song. It was one of the best moments of my life because he didn't have to do that.
The man who just won the Songwriter of the Year award from BMI, and recently stepped out as a performing artist, said thatKeith is deserving of the Icon Award.
That's right, absolutely! He is the greatest. Toby has a lot of support for the military and is very proud of his country. He kind of paved his own lane with that type of pride, and has shown his pride through his music.
Jake Owen shared that he was excited to see him receive an award.
It is obvious that he is well-deserving of it. He has been through a lot in his life. I think it is important for all of us to be here tonight so that we can honor him and root for him. I am happy to be clapping for someone else.
He has been fighting stomach cancer.
Throughout the night, there were references to Toby's songs like "American Soldier," "As Good As I Once Was," and "Who's Your Daddy" He has had a number one hit every year for 20 years in a row.
There were some surprise artists who celebrated some of his songs.
The singer took to the stage to perform.
She said it was an honor to play a part in paying tribute to him. As an Okie, you taught me that it is possible to be great if you work hard and give it all you have. You have never forgotten where you came from. That means a great deal.
Church did a version of the song in honor of his friend.
Dean and Scott sang a song.
Toby's friends and acquaintances shared their thoughts in video clips. Willie Nelson told him how proud he was and that they need to write a new song.
He smiled and mouthed words of thanks to those on stage. He took a sip from one of the cups he made famous with his song.
He was applauded for his philanthropic work with the OK Kids Korral. The state-of-the-art facility that takes care of kids with cancer and their families was built by him.
He was praised for his steadfast support of the military. He never wanted to miss an opportunity to support those who serve, according to his manager.
Kimbrell said that he did over 200 shows in the desert alone. Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait were mentioned. He went to bases that were unsafe. You were shot at and it made me not want to return. Toby would always return. You can't talk the talk and not walk the walk according to him.
He came on stage and thanked everyone who had helped him throughout his career. His determination to do things his way and chart his own course made it difficult. He said thank you to Kimbrell for standing by him.
We were in a fight all the time. I wanted to make my own music. It didn't work that way when I wanted to dress out of my closet. It might work that way now. They wanted to groom you back then.
He remembered that Kimbrell always said, "I'm with you, Dawg, let's go"
T.K. fought so hard that they kicked him off every board. My guy was 0 for 9 at the awards. I can no longer be part of this boy-of-a-bit. If you don't treat him better, I can't stay here.
Those types of awards were not important to him. It was the writing that mattered most in his early days in the business.
I wasn't interested in all of that. The only thing I cared about was the Songwriter Hall of Fame.
This night meant a lot. He said his family, his wife, his kids, and their spouses were all in the audience to hear it. He wished everyone a good night after thanking them.
Hats off to the person at BMI who chose the most symbolic way to honor the award. The sound of his song, "How Do You Like Me Now," filled the room when he stepped away from the mic.
